Welcome to The Santemp Company (also known as Inspection House 425, or I-425),
Located in Detroit's Historic Eastern Market. For over 200 years, from the early
days of horse-drawn carts to today's semi-trailer trucks, Eastern Market has
served Midwest farmers as a major resale site to wholesalers, retailers, and the
general public. Originally located on the banks of the Detroit River at the foot
of Woodward Avenue, Eastern Market moved inland to Cadillac Square in 1841, then
relocated to its current site in 1891.
It was in 1864 that the cornerstone was laid at Orleans and Adelaide by the
Martz Brewing Company. The building was built as a brewery and remained a
brewery for 90 years. It was converted into a public freezer by Arctic Cold
Storage, then renamed Standard Cold Storage in 1962. Tim Sullivan purchased the
building in 1979 and renamed it Metro Cold Storage.
The Santemp Company began operations in 1987 as the Federal Food Corporation, a
stand-alone USDA import inspection station, with offices on Orleans. In 1995,
Santemp moved into a newer building directly next to Metro Cold Storage,
providing a better service opportunity for their customers. Santemp continued to
expand building and inspection room and two docks, as well as purchasing Eastern
Cold Storage in 2005.
